Thermodynamic Basis of Unsaturated Soil Modeling
نویسنده
چکیده
Upon an increase of moisture, unsaturated soil may collapse or swell, depending on the loading state and history. This important characteristic must be realistically reproduced by a constitutive model aimed for practical applications. In addition to collapse/swelling, other essential features, such as deformation and failure following arbitrary shearing paths, must also be realistically reproduced. It is conceivable that a comprehensive model capable of simulating all those responses should be based on a sound theoretical framework, and the universal physical laws of thermodynamics may serve as a basis for such a framework. This paper describes such a framework.

Modelling plasticity of unsaturated soils in a thermodynamically consistent framework
Constitutive equations of unsaturated soils are often derived in a thermodynamically consistent framework through the use a unique ’effective’ interstitial pressure. This later is naturally chosen as the space averaged interstitial pressure. However, experimental observations have revealed that two stress state variables were needed to describe the stressstrain-strength behaviour of unsaturated...

To use soil hydrology processes (SHP) models, which have increasingly extended during the last years, comprehensive knowledge about these models and their modeling approaches seems to be necessary. The modeling approaches can be categorized as either classical or non-classical. Classical approaches mainly model the SHP through solving the general unsaturated flow (Richards) equation, numericall...

متن کاملRevisiting the thermodynamics of hardening plasticity for unsaturated soils
A thermodynamically consistent extension of the constitutive equations of saturated soils to unsaturated conditions is often worked out through the use of a unique ’effective’ interstitial pressure, accounting equivalently for the pressures of the saturating fluids acting separately on the internal solid walls of the pore network. The natural candidate for this effective interstitial pressure i...

[1] Prediction of water flow and transport processes in soils susceptible to structural alteration such as compaction of tilled agricultural lands or newly constructed landfills rely on accurate description of changes in soil unsaturated hydraulic conductivity. Recent studies have documented the critical impact of aggregate contact characteristics on water flow rates and pathways in unsaturated...
